A swirl pot helps to eliminate pockets of air that can occur in the water system, which can then cause the water temperature to rise. The pockets of air which can form create "hot spots" within the system, which is not good for the engine.

The swirl pot swirls the water around, drawing the air bubbles out from the centre of the swirl pot and out of the top through a bleed tube back to the header tank.
