One major part of RS Turbo tuning which is commonly overlooked when tuning a car is the Air Charge Temperature cooling setup. The standard Intercooler on an Escort RS Turbo will only keep ACT's down to a satisfactory level (ie 50 degrees C or lower) with boost levels of no more than around 10psi. Most stage 1 RS Turbo's are chipped and are running between 15psi and 17psi of boost. This is all very well until you realise that the ACT's associated with these boost levels in conjunction with a standard Intercooler are excessive to say the least. They would be well over 70 degrees C almost straight away.

As ACT's rise, power is lost due to the the air containing less oxygen than when the air is cool. An effective Intercooler will keep your ACT's ideally below 40-45 degrees C at all times, thus ensuring that maximum power is always available even in hot weather.

Fitting a GRS Motorsport Large Intercooler to a Series 1 provides only one small problem, which is the radiator fan. A solution has been found in the shape of a very thin radiator fan from Kenlowe. We can supply you the Kenlowe 10" Fan which is only 46mm thick, at a discounted price. This solves any of the engine cooling issues when stuck in traffic.

Caution must be given when fitting this intercooler as water temperatures may rise depending on ambient temperatures.
Please check your radiator is in good working order.

S1 Uprated Intercooler

This Intercooler can be made totally by GRS Motorsport for a cost of £200.00 outright, or for £165.00 + your existing S1 intercooler, the end tanks can be taken off of the old Intercooler and welded on to the new uprated Intercooler core.

On the S1 Escort RS Turbo, another good option is to fit a larger cored Intercooler in the standard position. The core in this uprated Intercooler is over 50% larger in volume, using a 96mm thick core instead of the standard 60mm. It uses a Twin core as well for better efficiency.
